Ian Jack – journalist

Posted on November 16th, 2022

Ian Jack spent a large part of his childhood in North Queensferry. He became a highly respected journalist and editor of Granta and The Independent on Sunday who combined forensic investigative skills with an elegiac writing style.

His essays included memories of his early life in North Queensferry and Dunfermline, and latterly the on-going tale of two other ferries!

He was born on February 7, 1945, and died after a short illness on October 28, 2022, aged 77.

Here is his obituary with links to three of his essays.

Village Show 2022

Posted on September 4th, 2022

A successful exhibition of village-grown produce,  home arts and crafts, floral art, photography, and baking, including the newcomer on the block – “free-from” baking.  There were also sales, the ever-popular raffle, and the wake-up voice of Dave Dempsey for the auction.

The day was busy and it was lovely to see so much enthusiasm for the show.  Children were running around proud of their entries, with parents and visitors browsing the many categories.

The Overall Winner of the show was Sandra Hood who won the Bob Cubin trophy and the baking cup from the SWRI.

The winner of the Heritage Trust’s shield was a proud Alfie Myles.  Very well done Alfie, we are sure your friends and family are proud of you.

A new award was donated by Pat Dennison in memory of her mother Connie Dennison who was a well-respected supporter of the village and the Heritage Trust.  The engraved glass bowl was won by Moira Clark for the best Pot Plant.

Another new award was presented to the child who had shown the best contribution in photography for “Flora and Fauna”.   The award was a cup won by our retired founding Trustee member John Done.  As most villagers appreciate, he spent his retirement supporting the flora and fauna of the North Queensferry peninsula and beyond.  He also contributed many articles to the Ferry News on the same subject.  The winner of this new award went to Beth MacGregor.  Sorry, we have no pictures of the award being presented… however, if you have, please email them to NQHTinfo@gmail.com, and we would be pleased to update this page.

The Jubilee Cup, for best children’s entry, was won by Andrew & Edgar Baumgart.  Here is the proud mother and son with the award.

                                 and her son, Andrew.

Here are other winning entries… so many, so of course, only a few can be shown…

The Maureen Trotter Cup for best Fruit & Veg was won by the North Queensferry Community Garden Group.  Sorry, we have no pictures of the award being presented… however, if you have, please email them to NQHTinfo@gmail.com, and we would be pleased to update this page.

… and no, the girl was not the judge!  We had, as usual, independent judges… and thanks to them too!

The photography category was well represented with many first-time entries and winners!

With the children’s artwork of course!

The children also made a great job of the Jubilee theme by making up crowns… along with decorated Jam Jars…

And lots of sewing, crocheting, and arts and crafts… a wonderful display of talent. Many more were on display so the following pictures are just a sample of the many winners…

And of course, the home baking… a good display and all mouth-watering! We all envied the judges who were able to taste them all!  However, many who attended the auction were able to purchase the baking that was made available.

The auction was also a great success with the many prizes and vouchers available.  Many thanks go to The Wee Restaurant, The DoubleTree Hilton, Rankin’s Deli, and Growforth for the vouchers they donated.

MANY THANKS go to all our helpers on Friday evening for set up, and Saturday for their help during the day.  Thanks also go to the many First Class Helpers that included many of the stalworth contributors to the Village Show and who were awarded a special certificate.   Particular thanks go to Mary Dempsey, Gill Brown, and Susan Woodshore for their support of the computer work that is used to track and processed the entries, categories, winners, and awards.
And, again thanks to the judges who had many difficult decisions to make.

If you have pictures that you would like added, please email them to NQHTinfo@gmail.com, and we will use the most appropriate ones to update this article.

We also appreciate the suggestions and feedback we have received and we will endeavour to take them into consideration next year.
